For me painting is an expression of love for nature, but also a manifestation of the interior imaginative space in which perception arises. My practice is grounded in the tradition of plein-air painting, and therefore subjects such as landscapes, still life’s and interior spaces are central to my work. However, I am also interested in exploring the edges of realism, and to this end enjoy pushing my brush work, paint texture, and descriptive marks into abstract spaces. I use light, color, and value to describe how an object really was to my eye, but also to infuse it with an emotive quality only present to myself. I believe that life is art, and the flowers I grow in my garden, the fruit given to me by a neighbor, or the birds I photograph on my walks often wind up becoming motifs in my studio. It is important to me to continually try new things and yet I return again and again to those iconic moments experienced in nature. It is this push and pull between old and new, self-expression and faithful reconstruction which provides me with endless tension and interest in my painting practice.
